I was a Citroen junkie and would never in a million years have considered a VW until I needed a bigger car and found a second-hand Golf at a bargain bin price. It is wonderful. Everything you say above but being diesel I get 50mpg around town and on long motorway/freeway I can get 60mpg. I have never before driven a car where I didn't have to rake the seat right back to get my knees under the steering wheel.
