Return of the Scirocco in 2008? Mmmmmmaybe

Rumors have been abounding about the return of this classic Volkswagen model for a while now, but a new artist’s rendering posted on Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport site piqued my interest.

* From LeftLaneNews.com:
We haven’t heard too much about the 2008 Volkswagen Scirocco lately, but Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport has just published a new artist’s rendering of the yet-to-be-announced car. While AutoCar, AutoBild and others have forecasted a Scirocco with a low, sloping roof and coupe-like profile, AMS is calling for something quite different. The image shows a vehicle with a hatch-like shape, similar to the original Scirocco and Corrado models. We’re not sure who to believe, but time will tell. So far, VW has only committed to a “2+2 sport coupe that hearkens to the heyday of the Scirocco.”
* From Dax:
While I am more enchanted by the ol’ Corrado over the Scirocco model, bringing back the Scirocco in new clothes is a great idea for VW. It will be built on the new Golf platform, and carry a supercharged 1.4l engine pushing 170hp. Sounds a little weak, doesn’t it? Hmm, oh well. I’m sure other options will be available. Pricing should place it between the new VW Golf and the upcoming VW Eos.
Volkswagen however has yet to confirm that they will build it. They also may not use the classic name, Scirocco. Rivo has been thrown around as a new name in the rumor mill.

Killer dude. The rendering looks a bit Mazda-ish for my taste, but I like where VW’s head is.
I, too, was thinking that it was quite reminiscent of the Mazda 3 hatchback. I’m down with a revamp of the Corrado, fo real
Yes. You hear that VW? While you’re at it, throw in a Corrado comeback. C’mon, pretty please?
Not exists better name for a car than Scirocco! :)
Well, I have one GTX 1.8 16v (140hp), and I like it a lot more than this modern and strange “scirocco”, rear is good, but by the front not much.
I have been waiting for something to happen and now this is happening, great job VW…I will be the first out there to collect the pennies in my pocket and save them just for the love of the Scirocco, ask any of my friends, I am a faithful Scirocco fan, loved it the first time I saw one and I still get goose bumps seeing one.
Who doesn’t love classic cars? Seems everybody does and hollywood has jumped on the bandwagon too. You see them in just about every movie and TV show now.
Great job team VW…I have a rabbit V black (2.0 TDI)…I like very much, but this car is a beauty… I want buy one, when will be ready for sale… Thanks for the best surprise.
Congratulations!!!
p.s.You”re the best…
Am I the only one who is not at all pleased by this? I don’t think it in any way represents a Scirocco. In-fact, I think it looks absolutely horrid. Something like a BMW 1 series and a chopped GTI. I for one genuinely hope this never goes into production. Where are the angles that make Sciroccos so beautiful? I understand that it’s a new age and boxy cars are not quite as efficient as these tear drop cars, but they sure as hell look nicer. I am not in any way an American car guy, but at least Camaro and Challenger look like their grand dads. Please, put an end to this lack luster crap we see driving down the street every day. Where you can say “Is that a BMW? Or is it a Mazda? Maybe a Toyota? Who knows these days.” Bring back the beauty of German engineering and make this car right.
