Ditch The White Earbuds While Driving!

Seriously, how could someone think this could be a good idea?

When you drive your car, you have great responsibility. It doesn’t matter if it’s on your way to the store down the road or on your morning commute, you should be alert and aware of your surroundings. Well, ideally anyway.

So my new greatest pet peeve is seeing people driving on the way to work, rockin’ out to their ipod – with their earbuds in! Granted, they don’t block out all sound and some folks might say it’s just as bad to have your stereo cranked all the way up, but this is still an obstruction to your hearing. It hinders your ability to hear other drivers and emergency vehicles, and it’s just…well…not intelligent. What’s worse, I’ve noticed it more and more on my drive to work in the mornings. Not good.

Is this the worst driving offense? Probably not. But it still pisses me off, hence this post. Please people, I love the enthusiasm for the ipod, but save it for work, jogging or whatever. NOT in the car.

  1. This is one of my biggest peaves as well, in fact I think in some states it is against the law to have both ears occupied with a device such as headphones…

  2. I’m much, much more afraid of people who talk on their cell phone (without an earpiece) than people who listen to headphones. 9 times out of ten when somebody is driving like a jackass it is because they are on their phone, the other 10% of the time is because they actually *are* a true jackass, aka drunk.

I’m pretty sure driving while wearing headphones (in both ears) is illegal in all states, mostly due to the fact that you cannot hear emergencies vehicles.

  3. Oh yeah, I would never wear headphones while driving my TDI because I wouldn’t be able to hear that sweet sweet sound that is the turbo whistle.

Ah yes - good call Justin. I do agree that most folks that yammer on the cell can’t multitask and driving seems to take a backseat to thier conversation - but something about seeing the headphones REALLY disturbs me.
