“100 fares in 14 days to uncover what it takes to be the ultimate city driver.” Volkswagen is at it again with another spectacular marketing campaign, this time for the new Rabbit.
The Gypsy Cab Project is the brainchild of Steve, a filmmaker from Colorado, who has never driven in New York. He’ll be attempting to give 100 people in two weeks a free ride around the streets of New York. During each trip, hidden cameras in his new Volkswagen Rabbit, decked out in checkered Taxi glory, will record the events that occur in daily urban driving.
I gotta admit, this is a novel idea to give people a real world experience with the new Rabbit, albeit either a hilarious one or a frustrating one depending on who you are. Given Steve has never driven in New York, let alone taxi people around has got to turn out… let’s just say… interesting.
The website allows you to watch the 16 trips that have been completed so far, along with a map overlay of the locations where each trip occurred. And if you happen to catch Steve “on duty” you can watch a live streaming video of the action. I tried viewing one of the trips, but could not make a connection to their server. -3 kudos for that. Oh well, maybe later.

Interesting….I dig how it’s a black Rabbit with yellow checkering instead of the inverse. This’ll be fun to keep tabs on.
