Volkswagen to Drop Price of New Jetta

Looks like VW is either trying to gain more marketshare for the MkV Jetta, or they just realized that they can’t successfully push their line upscale in the U.S. market.
For the 2007 model year, Volkswagen is dropping the Jetta’s price by $1,410 which brings the base model MSRP down to $17,105, not including all those lovely extra charges your dealer slaps on. There has also been talks of dropping some standard features from this base model to go along with the price drop, but nothing has been confirmed.
While there are probably a bunch of reasons why VW is doing this, one big one is the new Rabbit’s price point. Coming in at just over $14,000, the Rabbit provides great value compared to the Jetta. Since the Jetta is Volkswagen’s top seller in the States, maybe VW is afraid of losing even more Jetta sales to the Rabbit. I say that’s a good thing. Thoughts?

I wonder why the Rabbit is priced lower, there is no different between the two. The only advantage to the Jetta, imo, is that you can currently buy it in a TDI.
Your right, there isn’t much of a difference if at all. Kinda puts things in perspective. They should just go ahead and drop the Jetta all the way down to the Rabbit pricing. :D
That\’s very interesting. It\’s not often you hear of companies dropping the price on thier high demand products. This could be a way to attack giants like Toyota who have the entry level market blanketed with 4 models ranging from 10 - 15K. This would but the Jetta firmly between the Carolla and the Camry, which could be a nice place to be. But then again, despite solid 2006 numbers, I fear things may be more bleak at VW than we realize.
Mayhaps I\’m just a pessimist.
Wow guys. I bought my 07 Jetta MK5 on Holloween. I went to look at the Rabbit, and loved it! Then as we are walking in, he shows me a Jetta, and says they are only a little more, so i drove it, and bought it.
What a great value, and ride! I think they may be pulling the “swap” a lot. They priced it at 16,400.00 before i negotiated. I would dare you to find all the features in the base modle Jetta/ Rabbit in any other make. My guitar also just arrived! How cool is that!
