Well, they’re not really flying, but right now there’s a huge gathering of New Beetle owners in infamous Roswell, New Mexico for the 7th annual Roswell 2k New Beetle Car Show.
It all started in 1999 with a New Beetle commercial that made the statement “Reverse Engineered from UFO’s.” (View commercial here) A silver New Beetle pulls onto the scene, begins spinning in a circle so fast that it looks like a flying saucer, then flies off into the distance. Silver New beetle owners that were part of a New Beetle Internet chat list drummed up the idea to hold a meet and greet at Roswell, and thus began the history of the 3 day festival.
In March 1999, the group travelled to Roswell where they met community groups and hotels that were excited to hear about the idea. In 2000, the first R2K event was held and was a raging success with people travelling from all over the country to attend. The event’s growth over the years has drawn the attention of Volkswagen and they have decided to formally sponsor it.

Friday, June 23
- SkyWatch Party – 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm – The Clubhouse
- Pod Glow Cruise – 9:00 pm
Saturday, June 24
- Roswell 2K Car Show – 8:00 am to 3:00 pm
- Parade of Colors – 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm
- Saturday Night Events – 7:00 pm to ???
Sunday, June 25
- Shopping in Roswell – Morning
- Roswell Rally – TBA
- Alien Drive-In Movie – 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm – Fiesta Drive-In, Carlsbad
