Volkswagen Recalls 34,000 Passats Worldwide

Due to a potential problem with the clutch, VW has recalled Passats built between April and May of 2005 that are equipped with 2.0l TDI engines and 6spd manual transmissions.
This is yet another hit to Volkswagen’s supposed quality control. As if people didn’t have enough of a bad image from the JD Power Initial Quality Surveys. (Ranked third from last in the 2006 edition) It is stated in the original article however that Volkswagen brand chief Wolfgang Bernhard has made quality a top priority.
I don’t care though. I’ll still love my Veedub, broken window regulators, MAF sensors, oil sludging, electrical gremlins etc. etc. and all. ;)

Ditto for my ’04 passat. It eats wheel bearings for breakfast and has already claimed a transmission. So far, everything has been covered by warranty. Those issues withstanding, its a fine car.
I have a 2005 Passat (with a 1.8 liter turbo engine and auto trans.) that rolled off the assembly line in September of ’04, so the above recall doesn’t apply to me. The only problems I’ve had to date were a couple of bad module/sensors for the ABS and Electronic Stability Control, and the module that controls the locking and alarm system. Those were all replaced under warranty (ABS/ESP in July of ’05; alarm module in December of that year), and I haven’t had any other problems with the car. I love my Passat…
We have a 2006 Passat that is presently in the shop for a wheel bearing replacement. This is the 3rd VW we have owned with the same issue. The others included a 2001 Jetta GLX and a 2001 Beetle Turbo.
It’s about time VW looked into this.
