“We Will Match Toyota’s Quality”

New CEO Wolfgang Bernhard makes a bold statement.
According to The Car Blog anyway. I wasn’t able to dig up the quote for myself, but then again I trust TCB and am extremely lazy when it comes to a Google search. But this is interesting, even if it is not at all surprising. Quality and ease of ownership is something VW seems to have lost sight of over the years, and it’s something that has come back to bite them. Hard.
Being a former Toyota owner, I have to say that if VW comes anywhere close to fulfilling this claim I’ll be surprised, and pretty happy. I’ll be even happier if they can successfully communicate this level of quality to the masses. After all, this is something that has to be experienced and spread by word of mouth. You can’t just say “we make a quality car”. The level of damage that the VW brand has taken in recent years is going to take quite some time to undo. Hell, most of the folks I know (myself and family included) swore off Ford forever due to the crap they produced in the 80′s(sorry Ford fans, but with few exceptions this is true. My family had several Tempos, Tauruses, Mustangs and even Mercuries that prove the point). I won’t touch that brand with a 10 foot pole.
At any rate, Toyota is a great yardstick for success. Granted, many folks associate the words “bland” and “ubiquitous” with the brand (I know I do) but you can’t dispute that fact that they make a fantastic product, one that’s well worth the investment. Hopefully we’ll be able to say the same thing for VW soon.
