Mark IV Mirror Design Flaw

Something that drives me batty everytime I have to heat my mirrors.

I’ve been meaning to rant on this for awhile, and all you Mark IV drivers with the all weather package may feel my pain. Ya know the little knob that controls the power mirrors? The one that also turns on the mirror heaters? I have to say that i (mostly) dig the way that it works, just because I’m a bit of a gamer, and it reminds me of a joystick. Moving the mirrors up, down and side to side can be fun, though I don’t recommend doing it while driving. I don’t even mind that the defrost control sits there as a setting between the right and left mirrors.

But what pisses me off is the fact that I have to remember to turn it off. When I bought my car I was warned that leaving the knob set to the defrost position will prematurely burn out the heating element, something that is fairly expensive to replace. I shouldn’t have to remember to click it to the right or left setting once my mirrors are nice and clear. And as the weather starts to get cooler (here in Cincy anyway) I’ll be dealing with it more and more.

So folks, make sure to turn off your mirror heaters. VW, you dropped the ball on this one.

  1. Absolutely, dood. It’s either I forget to turn it off, or one of these days I’m gonna snap it off accidentally. VW “done good” moving it down onto the door controls in the MkV’s, but I don’t know if they changed how to turn it on/off. Maybe Timmau can chime in and let us know.
