Even the Freakin’ Pope Drives One

His holiness shows his love for ‘dubs once again.
Pope Benedict XVI is rockin’ some new wheels courtesy of Dr. Bernd Pischetsrieder, the Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft. The ride is a new pimp-tastic specially equipped Phaeton Limo, powered by a 450 hp, 6.0 l W12 engine specially equipped to meet the needs of the Holy Father. He seems pretty pleased:

Unfortunatly, it’s been getting increasingly difficult for me to laugh at joke about the Phaeton, but now it’s getting damn near impossible with the Pope driving one. Oh well. I can hear the marketing folks now; “VW. Even the Pope drives one.” or “Christians Wanted.” Oh. Maybe that’s too far.
For those that don’t know, this is his second ‘dub. That’s right, he was a fellow Golf driver! Rock it brother.

Having test-driven a W12 Phaeton back in January ’04, all I say is, the Pope is one lucky man. The Phaeton is one *very nice* car! It’s too bad VW was forced to drop it from the U.S. line-up. Had they offered it at a lower price, I’m sure they’d have sold more over here. Of course, most Americans still see VW as a “working man’s” car and not a luxury nameplate, so that factor may also have doomed the Phaeton in the United States.
Agreed. Most folks here do seem to feel that way, and balk at a VW with a 67 – 100k price tag. I’ve even heard dealers groan about selling the “Mercedes killer.”
Besides, isn’t that what Audi is for?
