Many inexplicable engine and electrical problems can be traced to missing or 'weak' electrical grounds. a theft control system can cause the engine to shut off if it has any missing ground connections. before troubleshooting a vehicle, always connect a dc voltmeter across the battery terminals and record the voltage. Now start the engine and measure battery voltage-It should read about 14volts.
use a quality oil filter-wix, napa, purolator. Don't overfill the fuel tank.If overfilled the vapor recovery system could be damaged. end.

WOW, I'm amazed at all the complaints. I've been driving a 1988 MKII jetta for 22 years without a single problem, electrical or mechanical. I completely rebuilt my Vdub 4 years ago with 350K miles on it. the only thing not replaced was the exterior paint and the Recaro interior. Car to this day still looks new with another 169K on the total rebuild. Car was maintained with oil changes every 3K without fail and wash and Hard wax every 3 months of it's life. I still drive her 85 miles a day. Just yesterday I replaced the entire Brake system after 22 years of service. I would love to see a Honda or Toyota do that. LOL. It comes down to how you maintain your car. If I saw a possible problem it was repaired right away. I didn't say, "Oh I'll have it fixed next chance I get" The best advise is read the owners manual and Lubricate, and Lubricate again.

@ ryan: Glad to hear you've had good experiences with your 'dubs. The problem is that VW has lost ground in the reliability department to both Japanese AND american brands, period. It's clear that this isn't an issue of taking "special care"of a car, but the production of an inferior product by VW.

But if you have tips for the "special care" of your VW, by all means enlighten us. It'd be nice to hear some actual substance to the venom you just spewed.

I buy cars to keep. Every one I've owned, except the Passat TDI. The engine is wonderful. It is a shame that VW placed a pile rubbish around a great powerplant.
My experience:

The FIRST DAY: The alarm control unit failed causing the engine to fail to start. I bypassed the starter cutout and drove it to the dealer, horn honking, lights flashing and they insisted that I had done something stupid, yet four months later they ended up replacing the darn thing. The next one failed about a week after. I gave up, disabled it and bypassed what I could.

Window regulators: x5. I finally looked at how they were failing, replaced the substandard piece of junk weight bearing plastic with a machined aluminum part that I made in the shop. No further troubles.

Engine Cutout: I've owned marine diesels most of my life. When a diesel starts it should run forever, unless it runs out of fuel. VW had a big problem with a relay, B109 which was underrated for the current it carried. I replaced it twice at great expense and finally measured the current and put in a properly sized Potter-Brumfield relay. No further troubles. I checked all the relays and most of them were carrying 90-110% of rated current. I replaced them all.

Door Handles: The door handles break off. Easily. I live in a cold climate state. It rains, water freezes the doors shut and the door latches open. The door swings wide open until the cabin gets warm enough to melt the ice out of the latches. I solved the latter problem by placing a small halogen light in the door behind the latch to heat it up quickly. The former I replaced 4 door handles on the drivers side, one on the passenger side. I pulled off the second one in a gas station. A guy in a brand new Toureg at the pump next to me burst out laughing. I was about to clobber him with the door handle when he said, come with me. His brand new (140 miles on it) was missing the same door handle, his third. I finally rebuilt a door handle out of fiberglass composite. No further troubles. For a while I hung a jump rope handle on the door latch and let it bounce like the Clampet-mobile.

Cabin electrical: Constant burning of a fuse. Traced to a short in the right rear passenger courtesy light. Wiring replaced/repaird. Constant burning of the same fuse. Traced to a left rear passenger courtesy light. Pulled entire headliner and have never seen such shoddy wiring, routing and worksmanship in my life. It was truely a fire hazard. Wiring replaced. No further troubles.

Air Conditioner: 4 yes, that's 4 compressors. In two years. Also, the condenser coil was placed to atract all possible road debris and puncture.

Window motors x 2.

Windshield leaks: 3 windshields and seals.

Tires: VW rims would not hold air. These are steel rims, not alloy. Bought new aftermarket steel rims. No air pressure problems.

Seat adjusters. 5 of those stupid knobs, until I finally made my own out of fiberglass composite. No further problems.

I am a somewhat talented physicist/craftsman. I know how to fix things, do things and make things. Usually they work and look pretty good. I have never had so many problems with any automobile. The only thing good I can say about the Passat TDI is that the engine ran well and the transmission never gave me a problem. I considered pulling the engine and sticking it in an old Toyota Camry with a run out engine (at 386kmiles) when someone offered me much more than the POS VW was worth.

My brother in law runs an ad-specialty supply shop. He made me a license plate that read: If you buy a Volkswagen, Keep your Old Car. You'll NEED it. I proudly mounted that on the front of the VW. One dealer refused to service it with that plate on it......Truth Hurts.

On NPR, I heard a woman with very similar complaints. Her solution: She gave the car away. Parked it on the public street in front of the dealer and had an essay contest and gave it away.

With all these reliability complaints, documented evidence in Consumer Reports, I'm afraid I can't believe anything the VW apologists say. VW refused to honor warranty claims, under-engineered this car and used a 25 cent part where a 30 cent part was required. It was planned to be a piece of junk, built to be a piece of junk, and they succeeded. My replacement Honda has not given me one millisecond of trouble, as did its predecessor Toyota.

I figure, that the Passat cost me more in repairs, parts and just plain aggravation than it cost me to buy it in the first place. May it rest in pieces.

I refer to my '03 Passat as my POS car.

The brake light switch went bad and the brake lights stayed on all the time. I replaced the switch, and then got the recall notice. I sent in proof of purchase, and VW denied it.

The coolant temp gauge has a mind of it's own. It's under extended VW warranty, but VM won't take my word that it's on again/off again, they want to see it not working. But it's intermittent, and won't freak out while I'm at the dealership.

It was not running right and the codes showed O2 sensor bad. After becoming a contortionist and changing it myself (and accidently breaking the dip stick), it was no better. Found it to be a broken vacuum line,

The cv boots went bad and I replaced the axles at 56k.

And oil changes cost nearly $50, with GTX full synthetic oil, Bosch filter, and CE detergent.

That's in one year of ownership.

Hello I have had 2 cars. 1989 VW golf and a 1990 Honda Civic. When it comes reliability the 2 are miles apart. The Golf had build defects and overheating problems. I got rid of it The Honda never gave me any problems. I sold it at 168750 miles. Never consumed oil. I began to use synthetic a few years before I sold it. Engine was perfect. Had abit of rust. From some the stories I see here they are actually unacceptable. You dont hear much of those with Toyotas and Hondas. They do have their problems though. But they will not leave you stranded on the road. That's uncommon

I have a 2004 VW Golf 2.0. I haven't been to the dealer for any warranty repairs since I purchaed it over 4 1/2 years ago. This old style Golf is still sold in Canada as the Golf City.
The car is assembled in Mexico and the engine and transmission are manufactured in Brazil. I change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles with Wallmart Supertech 5/W/30 synthetic motor oil and use a FRAM 2 stage oil filter. Its been a great car so far. Time will tell.

My daughter has a 2007 Jetta Wolfsburg 2.5 liter and it
runs just great for and has never been back to the dealer for any warranty work.

How you drive and how you maintain your car will make quite a difference over time.

I, too, grew up with some VW experience. I always wanted one. My Dad bought me an old, rusty "67 Karmann Ghia to fiddle with when I was a teenager. It was beyond my ability to restore that car, but I loved it and enjoyed driving it. When I was a little older, Dad bought an older, used fastback. The fuel injection system died on a long trip, dumping loads of gas into the cylinders and stranding us. I was sad when he sold it, just the same. As an adult, I've bought two VWs myself. I purchased a 1999 B5 Passat GLS as a used VW CPO vehicle. That car ran perfectly but had an annoying transmission shudder and constant issues with the electrical system. My dealer was wonderful, even so, and I'd recommend them. After loads of trips to the dealer for cascading problems, I traded it at the end of its CPO warranty. I thought, okay, bad luck. I fell in love with, and bought another Certified Pre-Loved '01 Jetta GLX VR6 with just 30,000 miles on it and a clean damage history. I kept it spotless and flawlessly maintained. I didn't notice it at first, but later found it had a timing chain slap that the dealer never could get out of it after replacing the guides twice. The car developed the infamous rapping noise VW Vortex fans know as a bad intake runner. They replaced the runner and even the intake manifold and that solved one of my noises. In two years, the car was in and out of the dealer numerous times, replacing the catalytic converter, the water pump, oxygen sensor, MAF sensor, the center armrest, front brakes, most of the guts that operate the Climatronic climate control, and more. It killed me and I took a beating, but I got scared of the thing's warranty running out, sold it, held my nose, and bought a new Mazda. It's never let me down. I wish I could have found a VW that was reliable. I would have kept it like new for years. I still love them and driving them (when they worked) was great, but wow, what a pain. And yeah, the maintenance costs!

Better late than never? Just noticed this topic - though I remembered hearing about it then.

Consumer Reports? Really who cares? I know I don't count on their opinions. Been driving VW's since 1974 and have never had anything more than a once and while minor issue.

The biggest beef I have with VW is their casual treatment of the model range for the U.S. market - they can't seem to get out of their own way. Plus they have a crappy corporate structure that holds them back. A friend drives a new Honda Fit, it's okay, but I know VW could make it better - why don't they?

Hey Ivan, losing oil is never normal in a car, unless it's a diesel and even then, not that much. I haven't heard about this problem in the 06 GTI's, and I recommend going to a different dealer cause it sounds like that one you've gone to isn't worth a piece. I hope you get things sorted out. Have you noticed any leaks on the ground where you park, or when looking at the undercarriage can you see oil spray all over the components anywhere?

I have a 2006 VW GTi, everything was going great with the car. I was in love with it, until after the first oil change. For some reason it seems to use up more oil than any other previous cars I owned, new or used. The WV manual says to change the oil every 5k miles, but just before 4k, it seems to be 2-3 quarts low!!! I thought maybe, they didn't put enough oil the first time I went to the dealership to get it done. But it also happened the secoind time I had to take it for an oil change. Just recently, I just drove 3.5k miles, needed another 1.5 more before the next oil change, and I checked the oil just to be safe, and it was down 2 qts. Does VW burn oil so fast? I asked the service department, and the guy on the phone said this was normal. I never had oil consumption like this in any other car I owned before. And sometimes the car wont start on the first try, and after it does, black smoke comes out the tail pipe. Does anyone have an answer for me???
