6months ago i became the owner of a used 2005 Jetta 2.5. i was very excited. it was cute and sporty but, most importantly, i felt i was investing in a safe, reliable car; very important given i had just moved 3000miles from home and purchased the car without the guidance of my father.

within the first month the car was misfiring, had horrible gas mileage, and would sometimes be unable to accelerate. the dealership i bought it at would not return any of my phone calls and i got a bad vibe from the local VW dealer who told me it'd cost $85 just to diagnose it. i went to my usual HONEST mechanic and was told 2 ignition coils needed to be replaced. that led to the connectors and the spark plugs needing to be replaced as well due to severe rust and erosion.

two weeks later car STILL after all that backfires and loses acceleration to the point where the engine completely seizes up and the engine light comes on(also the display on the dash that shows what gear it's in has every one lit up). it use to be semi-drivable(accelerated very slowly) if i restarted it so i could get it home/get myself out of harms way. 90% of the time it would start and drive normal with no check engine light on the very next day. due to that i hesitated to bring it back in because i thought there was still buildup in the engine from it being fixed and the problem had corrected itself. but today it wouldn't budge. just sat in the midst of rush hour Los Angeles traffic. revving away when i'd hit the gas with no response no matter what gear it was in... hardly the safe, reliable car i had invested in.

still at my shop being diagnosed but they think the transmission is shot. VW has yet to get back to me a month after i contacted them.

oh also if the blinker is left on when the car is shut off all the lights on that side of the car stay on.

car shakes when idle.

radio = dead. checked all the fuses, all are good the paint on the buttons is bubbling and peeled off in places, VW told me they'd replace it with the VERY same radio with the same ghetto buttons for a ridiculous amount... this car has been nothing but problems and i am now completely turned off to "German Engineering".

Carol, I have read your blog, and it is most disheartening that this has happened to you! This shouldn't have happened in this day and age, with all the technology involved, along with all the money it cost to buy that vehicle?
I feel that Volkswagen should do the right thing, and fully repair the engine at no expense to you! If you had gone to a private mechanic, I feel you should be compensated from Volkswagen for the loss of your money!
I'd suggest consulting with a lawyer about the Car Lemon Laws, which may help you?

I had financed a brand new 2010 Volkswagen Jetta
(Limited Edition) in May of 2010. My problem is when I brought the car into the service departmnet for the first 90 day courtesy check last week on August 14th, I had gotten it back with 3 scratches on the rear left side bumper, black grease spots on the exterior in various locations of the vehicle, and a rounded 2 inch spot mark in the interior on top of my driver side door!
I did not notice it when leaving the dealership, and made one stop to get a haircut. I had parked the car on the end corner of the street, so no one could park behind me.
Then afterward, I went home and parked the car in my garage, and to my suprise, I discovered the scratches!
I then called the sales associate who sold me the vehicle, explaining what had happened, and he said, why didn't you inspect the car when it was given back? I told him this is all new to me, since it is my first new car, and would never have expected that to happen! He then said, I should go to the service center and complain to them about the matter. However, I had told him that if possible, I could buy a product to get the scratches off the car? Then after having the car parked for 2 days in the garage, and went to use it, again, I found the spot mark on the interior door! lastly, if that isn't enough, today I had found grease marks on the exterior of the vehicle! At this point, I do not know what to do, since I had made that comment to the sales associate about fixing the scratches myself, and it has been a full week after the matter. My wife says to go back to the service center, and rip them a new A-hole! Demand that they cover and restore the vehicle to the way it was before! Well, that is exactly what I now intened to do! Because, this being a new vehicle, and have 63 more payments on finance!

I just learned a scary thing yesterday about my 2005 new model VW Jetta 2.5. I have had this car for about 3 years and have never had any problems. I have never felt that I would break down and anytime someone would ask me about my car I always gave it great reviews. Now... I am not so sure about all those great things I used to say. My car has been in the shop now for 2.5 weeks. I was leaving for work and it was very sluggish when idiling and the engine light came on. Fortunately I decided to drive it directly to my mechanic. He did a diagnostic which spurted out multiple issues with the timing. Checked the upper timing chain, which seemed to not be jumping. Changed out the camshaft, solenoid, and replaced the tensioners. Started it up and the valves bent. Got new valves, and the head gasket blew and the valves bent again. Finally resorted back to the timing chain (which he said is supposed to last the life of the engine) and he called VW. VW told him that the first two years of the new model Jetta, VW used inferior metal in the timing chain which makes it stretch, and thus jump. VW also told him that they have had at least 30 complaints of this. My car has 102,000 miles on it. Also learned to check my oil every time I fill up because if the oil pressure is too low, then the upper timing chain does not get enough oil to keep it properly lubricated. This is a warning to all that own a new model VW Jetta from 05 and 06. Beware of your oil level and be prepared to replace a part that is not supposed to be replaced and in order to replace the timing chain your transmission has to be removed which means alot of labor! Luckily I have an honest mechanic that is not charging me for the brand new parts he had to replace twice. I hope anyone else that has had this problem replies. VW shouldn't get away with this scam. If everyone that owned a 05-06 VW Jetta took it to their dealer for this issue, they would be making alot of money off of us since it is alot of labor to remove the transmission. After reading some of the other horror stories I feel lucky I have only had this one lengthy issue. Cars are going to break down and we just have to live with it, or find a different mode of transportation. Best of luck to all VW owners!!!

I'm just about to sell my Jetta. I have had the car personally for 12 years. It's a 1995 with 200k miles on it. Overall, the maintenance has been excellent. There have been some problems: cruise control does not work, modes oil leak, and a suspension cylinder broke. But at 200k miles I think a lot of cars will have had their fair share of problems. This has been a great car!

Do you still have the same car? I just bought a 2006 jetta 2.5L value editition from a friend, cloth interior, no frills, with 38,800 miles, about to loose my factory warranty.
PLEASE let me know if you sugest extended warranty, or can ofer any advice as to how much repair bills are.
Should I buy warranty from the local dealership or a third party warranty. Third party costs less but sounds like more of a hassle. It wouldbe me the insurance co and the repair man fighting (perhaps more).
NO one will give me an answer. Ther blogs are all 50/50 or so.
HELP!!!!!

I inherited a 2002 Jetta from dad he really had good luck with it and it go 43 and better miles per gallon diesel mileage. Problem for me is the brakes stick sometimes anyone know if this is a electrical problem with 2002 Jettas? I love the car its pretty nice to drive and comfortable. I notice that it has electronically controlled breaks when I looked up master cylinder part and booster. I think that there may be a problem electrically.

Many inexplicable engine and electrical problems can be traced to missing or 'weak' electrical grounds. a theft control system can cause the engine to shut off if it has any missing ground connections. before troubleshooting a vehicle, always connect a dc voltmeter across the battery terminals and record the voltage. Now start the engine and measure battery voltage-It should read about 14volts.
use a quality oil filter-wix, napa, purolator. Don't overfill the fuel tank.If overfilled the vapor recovery system could be damaged. end.

WOW, I'm amazed at all the complaints. I've been driving a 1988 MKII jetta for 22 years without a single problem, electrical or mechanical. I completely rebuilt my Vdub 4 years ago with 350K miles on it. the only thing not replaced was the exterior paint and the Recaro interior. Car to this day still looks new with another 169K on the total rebuild. Car was maintained with oil changes every 3K without fail and wash and Hard wax every 3 months of it's life. I still drive her 85 miles a day. Just yesterday I replaced the entire Brake system after 22 years of service. I would love to see a Honda or Toyota do that. LOL. It comes down to how you maintain your car. If I saw a possible problem it was repaired right away. I didn't say, "Oh I'll have it fixed next chance I get" The best advise is read the owners manual and Lubricate, and Lubricate again.

@ ryan: Glad to hear you've had good experiences with your 'dubs. The problem is that VW has lost ground in the reliability department to both Japanese AND american brands, period. It's clear that this isn't an issue of taking "special care"of a car, but the production of an inferior product by VW.

But if you have tips for the "special care" of your VW, by all means enlighten us. It'd be nice to hear some actual substance to the venom you just spewed.
