How Important is that Service Stamp?

Do you make sure to get your service manual stamped anytime you get work done on your car?

As I’m staring my 45k service dead in the eye, I came to a realization – with the exception of my first oil change, I’ve NEVER asked to have my manual stamped (that is, in the area where a service person is supposed to make a special stamp as proof that the work was done by VW) by a VW tech, nor have they ever offered. Which begs the question, how important is that stamp? Should folks really care?

How about you guys out there? Has anyone had a problem trading in/selling their VW because they didn’t have their little book all stamped out?

  1. hmm, I’ve not been getting the stamps either. I’d assume if they were really required, they ask for the manual or dig it out of that little shelf under the steering wheel in my passat each time they do schedule maintenance stuff.

dunno much about the trade-in/resale part my last few v-dubs have been leases.

  2. I think the importance of the stamps comes into play when you need warranty work done. I may be wrong, but technically they can deny the work if there is no maintenance history, though in real-world practice, I don’t think this is as big a problem as we think.

  3. Not important at all as long as you keep all your receipts and signed work orders from the repair center.

  4. Yeah, I just keep all my receipts in one file in a drawer, so that if I ever need them, I have them quick at hand. I never even knew there was a stamp until now!
