VW’s Search for the Oldest Running Diesel

You still rollin’ around in a 1977 Rabbit diesel? You could win a 2007 Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI..for six months.

The Car Blog reports that VW will celebrate it’s 30th anniversary of selling diesel powered cars by beginning it’s search for the two oldest running VW diesels with the highest accumulated milage, starting on March 1st. After completing a form and uploading pictures online, the finalists must stop by their local VW dealer for verification (sorry, only those with original engines need apply). The cars must be running.

The winners will receive a 2007 Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI for their personal use for six months. Wait..that’s it? The people who win this thing have cars that are close to if not 30 years old. VW can’t pony up for a full year lease? I love the spirit, but how about some more stuff? Like an interview in Driver magazine, some gear, maybe a feature on the website AND a year lease. These people have been babying these cars for awhile I’m sure – let’s really treat ‘em, eh?

Still, it’s a neat idea, and I tip my cap to VW marketing once again. Now if I can just find a ’77 Rabbit on eBay for mega cheap…

  1. Good luck finding an old diesel Rabbit for cheap, those things are going for big money right now!

A really cool 80 Dasher diesel wagon just sold on ebay for $2k, don’t see too many of those that’s for sure.

  2. I bought a diesel Rabbit in 1993 with 186,000 on it. Too bad the odometer quit shortly thereafter, because that car has been passed around the family and is still running on the original engine on my uncle’s farm. I’m absolutely certain that it’s got over 500,000 on it at this point, but couldn’t prove it.
