Volkswagen Pulls Ad Because of Suicide Content

Volkswagen was going to air a new commercial in which a guy is standing on a ledge contemplating suicide, until someone drives by and tells him about Volkswagen’s new pricing.
But the suicide content ruffled the feathers of some large organizations such as American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and the American Psychiatric Association. After pressure from these organizations, VW has decided to pull the ad, and AFSP has applauded them for doing so. On a similar front, GM has also since pulled an ad that had already been running in which an assembly line robot gets laid off and attempts suicide by jumping off a bridge.
I’m all for creative commercials and the like, but ones like these are always going to hit more nerves than I think is necessary to get the point of the commercial across. VW has also taken massive criticism, good and bad, for their “Safe Happens” ads in which realistic crashes are depicted to get VW’s safety point across.

I have seen the VW suicide ad aired several times in Canada.
