Passat wagon too much car for ya? How about this?
Leftlane News reports that VW has unveiled the 2008 Golf Variant, which will be released in the states as the new Jetta wagon. Check ‘er out (more pics available at Leftlane):

Yawn. I love wagons, but this isn’t exactly cutting the mustard. It’s lines go that much further to scream “Toyota Carolla”. And the tail lights don’t seem to fit the Mark V generation too well – they scream “1995 Toyota Carolla”. Then again, they’re trying to appeal to a more conservative soccer mom market, but there’s even a line between conservative and bland. This fella falls squarely into the bland category.
I just hope the U.S. version shows some significant changes, ’cause I don’t see this flying off the dealership lots.

Agreed.
the mkV line sucks in the appearance dept.
I gotta say that I’m diggin on the GTI & Rabbit, but the Jetta never really grew on me. It’s a shame, cause I really dug the Mark IV.
I seem to be in the minority, but I don’t think the new wagon looks too bad. I have an ’08 Jetta, and I love it. The styling may be a tad bland, but it has kind of grown on me. It’s got a certain subdued, organic, quality Euro-car look to it, that I find calming in a world of swoopy fins, spoilers, and “New Edge” body lines and creases. But then again, I’m 43 years old, and I don’t even like my rock music too loud anymore either. Maybe the Mark V Jetta was desigend for an older, more mature (and more affluent) buyer this time around, you know, to steer people towards a Passat as they get older? Kind of like GM used to steer Chevy owners upstream, towards Pontiacs, and then to Buicks and Caddies. In any event, I’ll be looking at the new SportWagen in a year or two, when my Jetta’s paid off.
