And Another One Bits the Dust

Yeah…ANOTHER headlight goes out. Grrrrrrrrr…….
So literally weeks after I have one headlight replaced, the other one goes out. What is going on? This is the 4th light to go out on my Golf, and I seriously doubt it’ll be long before another one goes. This is getting freakin’ ridiculous.
But, you the reader will benefit from my misfortune. I’ll be replacing this bulb myself, and take the opportunity to write up a “How To” on the subject. Stay tuned, it should be coming shortly.
Take that VW. If I can keep one person from going to the dealer to get a (prematurely) burnt out headlight replaced, it’ll be worth it.

Think you could add in something about the DRLs? My left one is currently out. ;-)
Rock on dood. :] Looking forward to that write-up. Man, I have to finish up my 24v Oil change how-to. ;)
Ahoy,
Prematurely burnt headlight? It happens. Perhaps more than you think. Why does it happen? I will explain.
First off, the H7 bulb is essentially a small spring in a glass tube. When said spring has electricity passed through it, it lights up, AND produces large quantities of heat. Now you have a small, HOT spring. If you shake that small, hot spring, it breaks.
What constitutes ’shaking’? Hitting a big pothole will cause the lights to break if they’re on. Closing the hood with the lights on will do it too. And the issue is compounded when it’s ULTRA cold out. I know. I found out the hard way when I closed the hood of my Golf at 5am on a cold February morning… and had two brandy new Silverstar lights blow at the same time.
I have been very careful since that day and have had my lights last MUCH longer now.
Ahh…interesting. Thanks for the info there Ed. I will have to watch that. Heck, I might even write a post to quote ya.
