Have you checked out Google Maps’ new street level views? If not, you’re in for a treat.
Google recently unveiled a killer new addition to their maps service, the “street view”, which as the name implies, gives you a street level 360 degree pan of your googled destination. You can also move along the streets incrementally and explore the entire city. Right now the view is only available for San Francisco, Las Vegas, Denver, New York and Miami. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’re in for a treat. Here’s a sample:

Yeah, that’s the 5th Avenue Apple store(I’m such a nerd). You can pan around or move up or down the streets by using the arrows. Very cool.
Kinda makes ya wonder, how did they get those images? Our buddies over at oneighturbo.com know. Google apparently worked with a group called Immersive Media, who had a fleet of New Beetles equipped with cameras to snap the pictures as they drove about the aforementioned cities. Here’s what one looks like:

Pretty groovy, huh? Read oneighturbo’s write up here. And if you haven’t played with the Google Maps Street View, I highly suggest you do(click the Street View button at the top).

This images are raising privacy issues with people. There is an expectation that we will have privacy even when in public when we don’t legally have it.
In the name of having fun, I wrote a post about Google Maps Zoom feature being renamed.
Interesting point there Thomas. I didn’t think of this crossing the line with folks. I doubt it’ll stop Google from adding cities to the street view though.
Along these lines of privacy and what people might be doing when they are captured on gmaps street view, peep this.
