The iPhone Effect

I can’t help but wonder, what will the iPhone mean for drivers?
With the blogosphere exploding in anticipation for Apple’s hot new uber phone, it’s hard not to think about what kind of impact it will have on our everyday lives. Cellphones and Blackberries have penetrated just about every corner of our existence, simultaneously simplifying and complicating our daily rituals. I regularly have arguments conversations with a friend of mine who was a philosophy major at Kent State about the pros and cons of the “communications revolution”, and I always find myself fiercely defending technology. And I usually do a good job of standing my ground.
But the stalemate has come around the issue of phone usage in the car. In many states cellphones have been banned in the car, and the penalties are steep - just ask another buddy of mine who just moved back from New Jersey. Clearly there is a risk involved, as it is a distraction and there have been many accidents caused by cellphone usage. Just talking on the phone is too much for people.
Not just that, but what has the iPod done for drivers? I’m seeing a disturbing number of people driving with white earbuds around Cincy - a number that has grown since I last wrote about it. So not only are they fiddling with their iPod while driving, they’re reducing their hearing abilities as well. Just imagine the backlash that could come from someone plowing into the side of an ambulance that they didn’t hear because they where rockin’ out to Metallica on their way to work.
So with the descent of the iPhone upon us, which is a phone AND an iPod, I can’t help but wonder what it’s effects will be on drivers (in the remaining states where it’s still legal to use a cellphone while driving that is). It can be extremely helpful, with the ability to access the web and Google maps in the palm of your hand. I know that once I get my mits on one, I’ll use the hell outta Google Maps to check traffic and find my way around.
But on the other hand, so much of the iPhone is visual. That compounded with the full touchscreen surface makes it a necessity to look at the phone. There’s no way to feel the buttons to make a call. The numbers aren’t even available until you press the “phone” button. I can’t just pick it up and hit a key to speed dial someone.
So all I have to say is this: with great power comes great responsibility (sorry, but I have to steal that one from Spiderman). If you happen to nab an iPhone on Friday, please use it carefully. Be sensible. Don’t try to merge calls and check Google Maps while flying down the highway at 90. We want all current and future Apple fans to be around for a long time.

Re: the iPods, I believe that driving while wearing headphones is illegal as well. At the least I know it is in the states I’ve lived in (Oregon and Washington).
