Volkswagen pulled the wraps off of their upcoming Jetta Sportwagen, set to debut in the States around March of ‘08, at the American Station Wagon Owners Association’s national convention. A few photos after the jump.

I wasn’t exactly enthusiastic about this guy when we took a first look at it from the New York Auto Show. Mrad wasn’t too thrilled either. Nevertheless, here it is in all its glory proudly proclaiming, “Here I am… strong and worthy grocery-getter of the masses!”

Ok ok, seriously. I have to eat my words. While I’m still not too fond of the rear end, this production model is looking a lot better than those earlier photos. Maybe it’s the angle of the shot? Or the color? I don’t know. I miiiight be able to rock one of these. I still say I like the Passat wagon a bit more, but the Sportwagen has won back some respect from me.

  1. “Here I am… strong and worthy grocery-getter of the masses!”

Hahaha! Awesome. I’m starting to warm up to it. The lines on the windows remind me of an A4 Avant. But it’s still nothing really to write home about.

  2. It looks exactly like what it is: a Jetta wagon. Given that I don’t particularly like the Jettas, this chunkified version isn’t a whole lot better, but it’s not horrifying either. The Jetta wagons never look as good as the Passat versions. It was the same with the last generation.

  3. This MkV version of the Jetta wagon looks better over all than the MkIV version. Looks like VW didn’t slap this one together like they did with the MkIV - IMO.

I’m in the market for a new car. I’m currently driving a 1997 Passat GLX VR6 and I want something that isn’t as large with plenty of cargo capacity. So, I’ve been tossing up between getting a new 07/08 4Dr Rabbit, or waiting out the Jetta wagon.

As for now, I’m waiting it out until the wagons arrive and I can do a comparison test drive between the Rabbit and Jetta wagon. I like that the wagon is a bit longer than the Rabbit. I’m hoping that the Jetta wagons will come with a beefier TDI (170 HP anyone?) option. Fuel economy, cargo, and-of course-cost will decide my choosing.

As for “sweet” features, I like the panorama sunroof option. I’m looking forward to seeing the new wagons.

Good call Mathew on waiting it out and testing both.

  5. Welp, I e-mailed Volkswagen the other night regarding the Jetta wagon, asking about the diesel motor, release dates, and such. And I got an e-mail back from VW yesterday. Come to find out, they have a little trick up their sleeve, the e-mail did not state that a “TDI” motor was among the planed line up (”TDI” meaning the 100HP motor released with the 2006 Jetta line up in early 2006.)

However, here is the e-mail I received:

    Dear Mathew,

Thank you for visiting the Volkswagen website.

The Jetta SportWagen, a sporty and dynamic wagon version of Volkswagen’s
top-selling model, made its U.S. debut at the 2007 New York Auto Show.
The Jetta SportWagen mixes practicality with European style and balances
    both elegance and sportiness.

Like the Jetta, the SportWagen continues the Volkswagen tradition of
offering a long list of standard equipment. Some of the many standard
features include: air conditioning, anti-theft vehicle alarm, cruise
control, CD player, traction control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes,
eight-way adjustable front seats with height, angle and lumbar support
adjustments, and a height-and-telescoping steering wheel.

The 2.5L Jetta SportWagen is expected to arrive at Volkswagen dealers in
January 2008. The SportWagen will also be available with a Clean Diesel
engine and will be certified for sale in all 50 states. Launching in
May 2008, it will offer a standard 6-six-speed manual or an available
six-speed DSG automatic transmission. This efficient Clean Diesel
engine will deliver 140 horse power, and 235 lbs. ft of torque. We
encourage you to keep in touch with your dealer for pricing information.

    Thank you for visiting vw.com!

Looks like I’ll have a few more months to save up for my down payment :D
