Interesting idea. I'd have to agree with Dax and Jordan - leave it alone. Volkswagen is over 50 years old, the logo is recognizable around the world. Ford and Chevy have been in the industry for over 100 years, and they haven't majorly messed with their logos - okay, they might've done some minor touch-ups over the years - but what company (in any industry) hasn't touched-up their logo?

My vote - leave it alone. It's beautiful as it is now.

Oooh, messing with brands as strong and old as one such as Volkswagen is like letting kids play in a nuclear missile silo. It's all fun until someone presses the wrong button. I don't know, I don't think I would make this change, unless they're uber certain it's going to be successful.

Don't mess with success. They have a highly recognizable symbol and I see absolutely no reason to change.
