VW Up! Minivan

The Truth About Cars drops some knowledge about a VW minivan concept.

TTAC (via Autobild) reports that positive feedback to the Up! concept has prompted VW to develop an entire line of low cost vehicles for the NSF (new small family) platform. A rear powered minivan will be offered among the lineup (due in 2010), which will start at 8,500 Euros (no word when or if they’ll appear stateside). Take a gander:

So this is it, eh? After years of longing for a new microbus, this is what we get? Seriously? This honestly looks like an attempt to run in the Scion market, meant to go toe to toe with the xB. I picture thugged out 16 year olds driving this thing, annoying the crap out of me with their thumping bass as I sit at a stop light. I picture this thing in obnoxious colors, like purple and lime green.

But then again, I actually like it on some level. It is different, far from what I imagine when I think of a minivan. It actually has sex appeal. It’s somewhat bold and goofy - kinda in a good way.

But what I really want to know is, how in the world do you use those mirrors?

  1. God, I hope not - BLECH!

Okay, a bit harsh. But I guess it depends on the size of the thing. If this drawing is the size of a mini-van, then no. But if VW wants to get into the low-powered (under 100HP), and compete in the “sub-compact compact” market (Scion), then VW could have a fighting chance - might not be strong, but a decent chance, unless they bring over the Polo. However, I feel that Rabbit is enough competition for Scion as it is now.

Now, last I heard, VW was working with Chrysler to build a new mini-van for VW, based on the new 2008 Town & Country. So, we’ll see what happens.

Boy, I write a lot on this site - LOL.
