With rising fuel prices curbing sales of big trucks and SUVs, it’s almost surprising to hear VW is adding another SUV to its line-up. But news comes from Europe of VW developing an all-new SUV that will slot in above the Tiguan but below the Touareg in its range, and it will have room for seven, with a possible on-sale date some time in 2011. Uhm… I’m puzzled by Leftlane’s clam that this new 7-Passenger SUV will fit between the Touareg and Tiguan. Both are 4-door, 5-Passenger SUVs. If it’s going to be 7-Passenger, it’ll have to be bigger than the Touareg, pushing the rumored 7-Passenger SUV to be VWs flagship SUV. Which would then put the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class SUV in VW’s cross-hairs.
If VW does decide to build and bring over the new SUV, I would be surprised. I think VW needs to do a little more work to perfect the Touareg before setting out on larger luxury SUVs, and therefor, I don’t think the 7-Passenger SUV would sell well enough to survive.
Sounds like VW is setting up for another Phaeton-flop State-side.
Good catch Matthew. Since this has come out in the media it’s had alot of folks scratching their head. I’m curious to see just how this pans out - it seems that VW STILL doesn’t understand the American market.
