The truly collectible VW's rarely ever make it to eBay or The Samba. It is similar to the way well paying or desirable jobs never make it to the classifieds. Before they are publicized they are scooped up by friends, family, others in the industry.

The prices you mention are fractions of what an original barndoor (pre-1955) bus or a split window (pre-1953) beetle can fetch. In a lot of ways the vehicles listed for sale publicly are the "left-overs" for the true collectors. It is not uncommon in the "VW underworld" to have vehicles selling for more than $150K.

Great article.
I've been staring at The Samba for a long time. There are so many good ones out there, which one to pick!?

Thanks for the inspiration, and the distraction from real work this evening!

I've had a '60 Kombi bus, '64 Notch, '63 Ghia convertible, '71 Bus, '91 GTi, '00 Golf, 01 Jetta Wagon, '08 Passat Wagon. Collectively I imagine i've put well over 250,000 miles on my cars, easy.

Hello Chris,
Thanks for the good article on OLD campers! I live in Ashland, OR and sometimes it seems as if everyone has one in their driveway here. I recently bought a 1985 Asi Riviera camper and I would like to sell it. Do you have any suggestions? It's in very good condition but my partner and I have parted ways so there's no longer a need to keep it. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
