It was all about US marketing. During the Auto Show when the 2006 Golf was being ready to be shown, the firm in charge of VW marketing pulled off the "Golf" tags and put on "Rabbit".

It's just a name folks. The "Rabbit" is the generation V Golf. Happily, the new 2010 Golf is absolutely fantastic.

Yeah, we agree Johnny. Volkswagen continually makes market decisions that just don't seem to make sense to us. Maybe we're missing something? :D

My fiance and I owned an 08 Rabbit and it was awesome. The best by far in that price range. If not for baby on the way, we'd have kept it hands down, or is that up?

Sadly in some ways, we now own a 09 Jetta and it doesn't have the refinement we believe the Rabbit motor had/has. The Jetta is not silent like the Rabbit's motor was/is, which to us is odd. We also miss the Rabbit's peppy drive.

I feel VW is trying to make a nitch in the car market that is not needed. The Phaeton in my option was never a good idea as VW is not known for the status of Mercedes, BMW or Audi or for that matter especially has long as they have Audi.

The mini van was just too cool and probably not practical past the concept stage and as long as Routon's motor is you know whose, it's an insult to anyone who knows and really bad for the VW name. it already doesn't help being know to have mysterious electronic Gremlin issues.

Sad. Just plain sad. Great vehicle, but poor marketing on Volkswagen's part. I don't recall ever seeing a Volkswagen Rabbit commercial ever on television.

I do remember seeing plenty Mazda 3 and Subaru Impreza commercials. Let's face it, competions is tough, and those other cars are pretty darn good. Not as good as my Rabbit, but I could have settled for them, if it came to that.

If Volkswagen had a clue, they would have capitalized on what made the Rabbit name so popular, not just nostalgic. It was an affordable, economical, fun to drive, and fun to own car. For those who don't Golf... "Rabbit" was just fine.
