Quote: "VW makes 5,000 R32s a year"

Not really, Volkswagen only makes 5,000 US-Spec R32s per model generation (so far).

I don't think the R32 is as rare in the UK or other parts of Europe as they are here in the States.

I don't mean to be a bug about it, just my thoughtful insight. No hard feelings. :-)

@ Justin: Good call - thanks for the info. I wasn't really attempting to make it sound too OMG-ish...just to point out that VW has had quality issues in the past (though one could argue that any automaker does).

Well let's not exaggerate. Leave the sensationalism to Left Lane news.

First of all, the recall has not officially been released so going to the dealer will not accomplish anything. We have to wait until the recall notices are mailed to owners, who then schedule appointments with their dealership for the service.

Secondly, and more importantly, many many cars have recalls for one reason or another. Take the B5 Passat for example, there were quite a few fuel-related recalls on this car that were quickly fixed with a dealer visit when they issued the recall last year. In my opinion, a simple simple cheap part replacement recall is not exactly "omg can you believe it!!!!!" material.

Lastly, this issue does not affect all R32s and seems to only rear it's ugly head when the ambient temps are very high and the vehicle has been driven for an extended period of time. Personally, I have never had the issue. Also, it's a fuel starvation issue, which causes sputtering and power loss. Not really a fire-risk per se, although any fuel related issue should be taken very seriously.
