It is with sadness that we bring you this news. Autoblog recently caught wind from Volkswagen that they will NOT bring the new Scirocco over the pond.

Autoblog spoke directly with Tom Wegehaupt, Volkswagen of America’s public relations coordinator, who gave a formal confirmation that Volkswagen has axed plans to ship the new hot coupe stateside.

As has been discussed in various websites’ forums and comments, fears that VW would *think* they can’t make a business case for the Scirocco have come true. Tim said that the car would cannibalize sales of the upcoming 2010 GTI, and that the failing health of the automobile market are to blame.

BOO HISS BOO!!!!

  1. This is me not being shocked. While it’s a bummer, building a business case for bringing the Scirocco over right now would be pretty tough.

Oh yeah, definitely Jordan. I’ve been skeptical ever since we originally aired that it would be coming. But maybe down the road, a version 2 or later might finally come over. :P

  3. Volkswagen is being pretty lame right now. MkVI R32 is being killed off in favor of a the “R20″, they’ve reverted back to the “Golf” nameplate, and now they’re dropping the Scirocco from the State’s line up.

But, they’ve revamped their website (has anyone noticed the subtle changes?).

They could still bring over the Scirocco if they’re not going to offer a VR6-based Golf (GTI or R32/R20 included), if they offered it with the VR6 and sold it as their premier sports car in two trims: Sport or Lux, and they could have different options accordingly.

Thumbs down. Volkswagen, stop with this roller-coaster ride of “Duh, what should we do?”

Oh, and yet we’re supposed to get the new Polo too? Sure, when are they going to pull the plug on that?

  4. This is really sad, I remember the first Volkswagen that impressed me was the Scirocco even though I ended up buying a Honda as my first car. Now days, I still dreaming about owing a German car particularly a Diesel model.

  5. I just bought a Rocco, and I am having it shipped to the states. Can’t wait to spin the tires.

Hey Joe, unfortunately I’ve heard of this happening pretty often. I’m kinda worried about mine, since my ol’ GTI is getting up in years. Is the dipstick still in the engine, and can you pull it out? Your best bet is to see if you can purchase a new dipstick from the dealer parts counter or from a site online.

  9. is it possible to finish breaking off what is left of the oil dip stick plastic tube(Yellow) by hand and if so how do you keep the little broken pieces from falling down into the oil. plus can the new plastic piece be put on by hand or do you have to have a special tool!!!!!! thanks joe

Hey Joe, I’d try to carefully remove the dipstick intact so you don’t have to worry about that. Then you should be able to get a replacement. Either way, yes, be very careful not to drop anything into the oil pan, otherwise you’ll be dropping your oil pan as well to remove it. Not a terrible job, just messy and extra work. :D

  11. What is going on with VW? I think that it is simple – the US market prefers tasteless, soul-less appliances (like Toyota) with automatic trans, self-parking, 83 cup-holders, etc. There is no market for “real” VWs. Don’t blame VW; blame our fellow Americans who create the market. Example – try to buy a CC with a manual trans – the only choice is the base model, plastic seats, base audio. Another example – the new Jetta with the solid rear axle, ala Chrysler products of 1986. Sad, indeed. At least the GTI has remainded solid (so far)! Thanks for the great web-site – I enjoy reading it!
