I think that it is simple - the US market prefers tasteless, soul-less appliances (like Toyota) with automatic trans, self-parking, 83 cup-holders, etc. There is no market for "real" VWs. Don't blame VW; blame our fellow Americans who create the market. Example - try to buy a CC with a manual trans - the only choice is the base model, plastic seats, base audio. Another example - the new Jetta with the solid rear axle, ala Chrysler products of 1986. Sad, indeed. At least the GTI has remainded solid (so far)! Then you should be able to get a replacement. Either way, yes, be very careful not to drop anything into the oil pan, otherwise you'll be dropping your oil pan as well to remove it. I'm kinda worried about mine, since my ol' GTI is getting up in years. Is the dipstick still in the engine, and can you pull it out?
