Yup - you read that right...every one.

Leftlane News reports that VW is recalling all 2008 R32s due to a “faulty fuel tank ventilation valve that can cause fuel to leak and potentially create a fire”. Yikes. While this sounds bad, is it really that bad? VW makes 5,000 R32s a year, so it’d be very easy for an entire model year to suffer from the same defects.

But then again…big or small, it’s an entire model line. As yours truly is all too aware, VW has been plagued with quality issues for sometime now. And while things have supposedly gotten better, something like this only goes to support the contrary.

Nevertheless, if you’re one of the lucky few to own a 2008 R32 take your baby to the dealer for free service to replace the faulty valve. I sure wouldn’t want my R32 to catch on fire…unless I drove it really fast and somehow managed to go back in time.

Thankfully there have not been any accidents related to this recall, but apparently owners of the new Volkswagen Passat CC could find themselves losing control of their beautiful new rides.

According to the NHTSA, a capacitor in the steering mechanism could be damaged, resulting in the car not responding to steering input. What a polite way to say, "I CAN'T CONTROL THE CAR!!!! AAHHHHHH!!!!!!"

Leftlane News reports that VW is recalling every gasoline powered Passat sold in the U.S. from 1999 - 2005. Ouch.

The Passats can be checked for up to three issues:

Passats equipped with an automatic transmission will have their firewalls inspected, as additional shielding may need to be added by the catalytic converter.

1.8 T Passats will be checked for a faulty fuel line.

All wheel drive Passats will be checked for damaged fuel tank ventilation valves.

This recall is not at all surprising, as we’re heard Passat owners tell horror stories for years. We can only hope that this massive recall will finally show VW the cost of shoddy craftmanship, and they will continue to improve their production standards.

If you have a Passat from the years listed, call you local VW dealer to schedule the work. While there have been no injuries or accidents linked to these issues, it’s best to get it taken care of sooner than later.

We came across this little goodie over at CNN.com where they state Volkswagen is recalling just about every MkIV generation vehicle.

Going out to Golf, GTI, Jetta, New Beetle and R32 owners, the recall states that brake light switches can either fail to come on or remain stuck on. They estimate about 800,000 vehicles are affected. I’d estimate that’s about every MkIV model out there. lol

Volkswagen is prepaaring for the deluge of service appointments to make the repair at no cost to the owner, however notifications about the recall aren’t scheduled to go out until April.

Model Specifics:
- 1999-2005 Jetta sedans
- 2001-2005 Jetta wagons
- 1998-2007 New Beetle
- 2003-2007 New Beetle Convertibles,
- 1999-2006 Golfs and GTIs
- 2004 R32

All of these are U.S. spec models.

Due to a potential problem with the clutch, VW has recalled Passats built between April and May of 2005 that are equipped with 2.0l TDI engines and 6spd manual transmissions.

This is yet another hit to Volkswagen’s supposed quality control. As if people didn’t have enough of a bad image from the JD Power Initial Quality Surveys. (Ranked third from last in the 2006 edition) It is stated in the original article however that Volkswagen brand chief Wolfgang Bernhard has made quality a top priority.

I don’t care though. I’ll still love my Veedub, broken window regulators, MAF sensors, oil sludging, electrical gremlins etc. etc. and all. ;)

Does your '06 New Beetle TDI got ya down?

It came down to the 2005 and the 2006 New Beetle… and after reading some folks’ rants on newbeetle.org about their 2006 acting up, I think I made the right choice (actually the higher powers made the call for me — I would not accept an automatic transmission, and no local dealer could find me a platinum gray or gecko green ‘06 with a manual transmission!).

Turns out many folks are coming close to citing the Lemon Law for their 2006 New Beetles. I have read reports (read: horror stories) about the Electronic Immobilizer flaking in the ‘06. Now, I’m no mechanic (far from it), but that doesn’t sound so hot. There are individual accounts of folks whose NB won’t read the keys, heat not working, radio not working, window going nutty, and so on. Most of the cases involved the 2006 TDI engine.

I cannot find any official recalls for the equipment, just multiple stories of folks’ trips to the dealer. In the state of Ohio, three trips to the dealer for the same problem is subject to the Lemon Law.

The lesson learned here is never to take on the first version of a new engine… I’ll stick with my 2005 2.0…
